We were stationed in Japan throughout the 1970s. The stars and stripes were a major source of news and information while we were stationed there and continues to be a major source of news and information for me to this day.

I was in G-2-6 in 1963. Was deployed on USS Boxer to Gitmo as part of a show of force to Castro, who, at the time, wanted the US out of Gitmo! Was also deployed to Port-au-Prince, Haiti to assist in quelling the problems created by its leader, Poppa Doc Duvalier. Returned to Lejuene and was later assigned to Marine Barracks at Fort Meade, MD.

Every present and former military person should subscribe to this publication. It will keep you informed on present and past military news. It also has links to a number of government federal and state agencies associated with military personnel. As a side line of news in 1965 when I volunteer for my first tour of duty in Vietnam I was stationed in Korea. I caught a flight to Japan and to get to Vietnam I caught a ride on a C-130 full of Stars & Stripes newspapers. The crew chief make me a place to sleep on top of a stack of S&S papers. The plane made its first stop in DaNang which was under a mortar attack the C-130 made a short landing the crew chief slide a pallet of papers off on the runway and the C-130 made a quick takeoff. The date was 12-10-65 my 18th birthday- hello Vietnam.
