"Guess who just read her first book on your app?!!! Our four-year-old (not even four and a half yet) is reading! Thanks for making such an awesome app!!!" "My four-year-old loves playing on the app and will beg me each day to let her do lessons on it. Through the fun and engaging atmosphere of the app, she quickly learned the letter sounds and started putting them together to form words. And we only used the app for a month before she read her first book on it! The app has made learning to read fun and enjoyable. We have loved it!" • Avatars Are Lacking; Offer More Diverse Ones

Ok, I read a review of this app from a fellow teacher and had to get it for my son. The steep price is an investment that I’m happy to make. However, I’m already having misgivings b/c of the avatars. As a teacher I am versed in the potential efficacy of digital educational games. Since digital games are a form of embodied learning, it is rational (and good economic sense) to have the audience identify with game avatars as this makes the learning process more “realistic”. At this point, my son will not identify with the male avatar and will not say “that’s me!” when he views that avatar. This sustained gap between the digital world of the game and his physical self (as a dark-skinned Black boy) will prevent him from “buying into” the game. The game would fail at “hooking him” and its potential efficacy will be compromised. I want K, my son, to immerse himself in the game to the point that he becomes intrinsically motivated to finish ALL the levels and therefore learns to read. Without an avatar that looks like him I know that his immersion into the Phonics Museum world will not occur. Why not offer a choice of avatars, one dark-skinned and one light-skinned avatar for each gender, for starters? Frankly, at this point in our digital age (and this price point) I expected more diverse representation and will likely drop the game during my trial period.

We use Phonics Museum everyday! Such a great intro to phonics for my younger kids and a good review for my older emerging readers. The technical bugs have been dealt with and e are enjoying smooth sailing!! Please add 1st grade level!
  • Love it for K, wish it went through 1st

Hi! So my daughter went through the entire program and it really DID teach her to read. I supplemented with the physical versions of the books, so she would feel comfortable "picking up a book" as part of the learning to read process. It was engaging and incremental without getting boring. We loved all the characters. There were a few glitches along the way that I hope they've figured out. My only complaint is that I wish it progressed through the 1st grade. As a busy home educator of 5, I would have loved for my daughter to be able to keep going into all that is covered with the physical version of Phonics museum 1st grade.

As a beta tester I loved this app! There were issues but they were quick to be addressed and fixed. I was given a free year for testing but we have only been able to use it a handful of times because it just won't work. I have tried since November to get it to work - emailing with no response, deleting and reinstalling (temporarily helped) .... I am currently in contact with tech support who is trying to help but I still can't login. If I am able to login and my boys are able to use the app, I will update my review accordingly.
  • Not worth the price.

Percival’s voice is creepy and annoying. I’d put up with it if it were free.
  • Game stuck on letter A

My son is on the second picture but the frog game is stuck and even if you press the letter a as requested it doesn’t advance

Purchased this for my 4 year old daughter. LOVE It! Incredible classic art, phonics and learning! This one is a keeper. So far, no glitches or problems. Thank you Veritas Press! Edited 6-8-2018 She just finished her final lesson and is soooo excited! She’s reading and writing. She’s learned her lessons well from Ms Biddle. Thank you VP! Pros: a fun, comprehensive phonics app that systematically builds concepts. I love the classic artwork, introduction to artists and Percival. The pacing was good for her & the app kept her engaged right to the very end. Generally I sat with her while she completed the lesson....Special time together daily, fun learning & no prep for me! That’s a WIN! Our iPad didn’t have any issues with crashing or glitching. I did call customer service once early on for a tech issue and it was quickly resolved. Cons: The only ongoing app issue was each book took a very long time to load & had to be reloaded every time she went back to it in the game room. It was inconvenient (probably our dsl internet)so she practices reading books with the Bob Books. The laughing pig game makes a really strange sound. In some of the listening games it was difficult to differentiate sounds. I was hoping for Biblical values to be interwoven into the lessons- they were not. All in all this app was well worth its price for me. I am very happy with the end results - a 4 year old who loves to read and be read to! Who doesn’t want to hear, “Mommy, can I read to you?” 😃😍😃

I completely agree with the other critiques. It’s difficult to access. Sometimes we try to log on and it won’t load. I don’t have any issues with my other apps, so it’s not related to my device. It just gets stuck on the “ereader” when loading. Also, they do have a very strong schwa sound on the letters. The “k” is a strong “Kuh”. I want to use this as a supplement, but it’s becoming more of a burden than a benefit. My kids become frustrated that they can’t actually access anything.

I love the content in the app. However, it is VERY glitchy. I frequently have to delete the app and reinstall it in order for it to work. It hangs up on the “logging in” screen as well as outside the various entrance pictures. The further my daughter progresses the slower the app runs. This is VERY frustrating for an app for which I pay a monthly fee.
  • Love Veritas, but app is full of glitches

We love Phonics Museum! My daughter has really enjoyed learning to read using this method! The app itself, however, is not great. I’ve had to uninstall and reinstall too many times to count. I hope the issues are fixed soon, considering we paid so much to use it!
